El-Hang Lee Ph.D.
Professor El-Hang Lee graduated from Seoul National University with a B.S.E.E. (Summa Cum Laude) in 1970 and received M.S., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Physics from Yale University in 1973, 1975, and 1977, respectively, under the guidance of Professor John B. Fenn (Yale, Nobel Laureate, Chemistry, 2002) and Professor Richard K. Chang (Henry Ford II Professor, formerly from Professor N. Bloembergen, Harvard, Nobel Laureate, Physics, 1981). Prof. Lee subsequently conducted teaching, research, and management in the fields of semiconductor physics, materials, devices, optoelectronics, photonics and optical communication at Yale, Princeton, MEMC, AT&T, ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute; VP) and KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology). In 1991, Prof. Lee joined INHA University, where he has been a DistinguishedUniversity Professor, founder of the School of Information and Communication Engineering, Dean of the Graduate School of Information Technology, founding director of the OPERA (Optics and Photonics Elite Research Academy) National Research Center of Excellence for VLSI Photonics. Prof. Lee served as the VP of the Optical Society of Korea and as the founding president of IEEE/LEOS-Korea, foudning director of SPIE-Korea, and founding editor of the international version of ETRI Journal. Prof. Lee is an author and co-author of more than 280 international journal papers and 840 worldwide conference and proceedings papers; edited several proceedings; wrote one book. Prof. Lee has delivered nearly 150 plenary, keynote, and invited talks in international conferences and institutions; holds over 130 international patents; and served over 100 times as the conference chair, organizer, committee member, and international advisor for international conferences. Prof. Lee is an elected Fellow of APS (American Physical Society), IEEE, OSA (Optical Society of America), SPIE (International Optical Engineering Society), IET (formerly IEE, UK), KPS, OSK, IEEK, and a Life Fellow of KAST (Korean Academy of Science and Technology). Prof. Lee is a recipient of more than 15 national and international awards, including the National Medal of Mok-Ryun Civic Order, National Medal for Science, and King Sejong Prize (all from the President of Korea); Grand Science Award; IEEE Third Millennium Medal (IEEE); Best Research Award (Korea Federation of the Academic and Professional Societies); and Distinguished Lecturer Award (IEEE). He is currently serving as the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Photonics Technology Letters.
