Geoff Smith is Emeritus Professor at the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia, since 2008, and was formerly Professor of Applied Physics from 1992. His contributions to the science and energy-related applications of nanomaterials began in the mid-1970s and continue today, with important recent new output. Often in collaboration with Australian and international companies, he has led developments in aspects of solar thermal energy, energy efficient qindows and paints, sky cooling, natural lighting and LED lighting. Products, a start-up company, many papers, and several patents have followed. Dr. Smith has contributed to innovative energy efficient building projects including the Sydney Olympics in 2000. He is chairman of the Australian Standards Committee on roof glazing and skylights and adviser to the Australian Building Codes Board in energy efficient glazing. Basic contributions to nanophotonics, thin film optics and polymer optics have underpinned his applied work. He has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University in Sweden and is a Fellow of the AIP and the Australian Institute of Energy. Dr. Smith;s work has been recognized with both awards and prizes.
