The City of Los Angeles and LA Council of Engineers and Scientists (LACES) is looking for sponsors for a special nanotechnology essay content, aimed at encouraging college-bound high school seniors to take up nanoscience as a career. The contest, which closes Feb. 8, offers cash prizes to students, has attracted support from dozens of industry and government officials looking to promote future nanoscientists.

Los Angeles Looks for Nanotechnology Essay Contest Sponsors

The idea of starting LA's Nano Essay contest was generated from a Nano Technology Professor, Dr. Laviano, at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

“We need [the nanotechnology community’s] financial assistance to make this event successful,” said LACES president Michael Simpson.

Contributions will assist LACES secure monetary awards to winning students. “NO donation is to small and we accept books or any item to stimulate an interest in nano technology,” Simpson added.

Finalists will be selected during Engineering Week (Feb 17-23) and be mentioned during E-Week along with companies that provide support for prizes.

This High School Essay Contest for Nanotechnology is one of very few intramural academic competitions to stimulate secondary students thinking in an emerging technological field such as Nano- Technology. With generous support from companies such as yours we can continue to provide the students in our schools with the challenges they require to take on leadership roles in the future. Please make checks payable to LACES at the above address.

The contest essay should discuss one or more applications on nanotechnology, such as for semiconductor chips, instrumentation, green technologies or basic sciences. The essay should be no more than two pages, 750 words in length, single-spaced, and should assume the essay will be reviewed by what sponsors call "a nanotechnology knowledgeable judge."

A 1-page 8” x 11” sketch may be included to show how the new nanotechnology operates.

“The Los Angeles Council of Engineers and Scientists has staged a nano contest along with the celebration of National Engineers Week for the last three years. The purpose of the contest is to generate interest in the nano technology field and expose young people to this emerging technology,” said Michael Simpson, a spokesperson for the contest. “We hope in the future to create nano technology clubs in high schools and do additional hands on experiments and grow this contest as much as possible.”

The idea of starting this contest was generated from a Nano Technology Professor, Dr. Laviano, at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Dr. Laviano serves as the on-line mentor and also has created curriculum for a high school course and is implementing the class in schools in the City of Los Angeles.
