The Microsystems and Nanotechnology Centre, within the Materials Department, was established in 1994 by Professor Whatmore.

Since then it has grown to the stage where there are approximately 50 staff and students. The Head of Centre is Dr Robert Dorey.

The Centre runs the innovative MSc in Microsystems and Nanotechnology.

Courtesy of IBM The Centre's research activities span from the development of new functional materials through to prototyping of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) devices. The work conducted is truly multidisciplinary and encompasses the such diverse fields as microengineering, nanotechnology, biology, materials science, physics and chemistry.

Excellent in-house facilities are available, including over 100 square metres of clean room space, extensive analysis, synthesis, electrical and device characterisation equipment.

The Microsystems and Nanotechnology Centre enjoys close collaboration with industrial sponsors ensuring that the research carried out in the labs continues to maintain its relevance to the latest industrial devices and material requirements.
