In 2005, the National Science Foundation established The Center for Research on Interface Structure and Phenomena as a partnership with Yale University, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Southern Connecticut State University.
The center, with $14 million from the NSF, will investigate the electronic, magnetic and chemical properties of complex oxide materials and their interfaces, with potential applications to magnetic storage, spintronics, and chemical sensing.

Researchers at University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) have developed a supercapacitor or electrochemical capacitor (EC) composed of an expanded network of graphene — a one-atom-thick layer of graphitic carbon. The team demonstrated excellent mechanical and electrical properties as well as exceptionally high surface area.
