The Drexel Nanotechnology Institute (DNI)coordinates and develops efforts at Drexel University (Philadelphia) in the broad and interdisciplinary area of nanoscale science and engineering, including research, undergraduate and graduate education, technology transfer, outreach, and dissemination.

Research in the Nanomaterials Group (NMG) is focused on the fundamental and applied aspects of synthesis and characterization of carbon nanomaterials (nanotubes, nanodiamond and nanoporous carbons), ceramic nanoparticles (whiskers, nanowires, etc) and composites. NMG develops and studies new nanomaterials and works closely with industry with the goal to significantly decrease the time from discovery to commercial application of new materials.

Current research topics include:
  • Carbide derived carbons with tunable porosity for applications in:
  1. Supercapacitors and batteries
  2. Gas (hydrogen, methane) storage
  3. Biomedical materials (selective adsorption, etc.)
  • Carbon nanopipes for nanofluidic devices and fundamental fluid behavior at the nanoscale
  • Composites containing carbon nanotubes and diamond nanoparticles
  • Detonation nanodiamond – surface modification, properties and applications
  • Carbon coatings on SiC fibers and whiskers
  • Raman spectroscopy, including in situ studies under pressure, high temperatures and in reactive environments, and surface enhanced Raman
  • Environmental SEM and TEM study of nanomaterials and nanostructures
