The University of Oregon (Eugene) Materials Science Institute brings together an interdisciplinary approach to nanotechnology, uniting faculty from Chemistry and Physics Department. The MSI is working in partnership with other Oregon universities and private firms in the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI).

ONAMI's focus focus fall into four activities: nanotechnology enabling microtechnology, microtechnology enabling nanotechnology, nano and micro enabling biotechnology, and nano and biotechnology enabling microtechnology.

ONAMI's goals stem from interest in the integration nanostructures and microtechnology over length scales ranging up to 8 orders of magnitude to produce materials, devices, and systems for high impact applications in the fields of energy, sensors, electronics, medicine, chemicals, environmental remediation and others.

ONAMI a collaboration involving Oregon's three public research universities – Oregon State University, Portland State University, and the University of Oregon; the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (Richland, WA); the state of Oregon; selected researchers from the Oregon Graduate Institute and the Oregon Health and Sciences University; and the world-leading "Silicon Forest" high technology industry cluster of Oregon and southwest Washington.

OU's nanotechnology focus is aligned with commercial "small tech" R&D effeorts at Intel Corp. (Hillsboro), a leading nanoelectronics center; ewlett-Packard's MEMS/microfluidics facility (Corvallis), LSI Logic/Nantero's nanoelectronics lab (Gresham). FEI Co.'s nanotechnology tools manufacturer (Hillsboro), and Electro Scientific Industries' laser processing of materials for electronics (Portland), and other commercial firms with investments in nanoscience R&D.
