The univerisity is working to create an environment where the nanotechnology industry can grow, expand, and reach its full potential. In January 2005, Chippewa Valley Technical College began offering the first-year nanoscience degree, one of only two such degrees in the U.S. The Department of Commerce awarded $1.5 million to help create a $5.5 million nanotechnology incubator that is expected to create 650 jobs and generate $30 million in private investment. Construction of the center began in late 2006.

Chippewa Valley Tech, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and UW-Stout have formed a partnership to grow, retain, attract and develop new technologies.

Original nanotechnology curriculum will be jointly written by UW-Stout, UW-Eau Claire and Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty following receipt of a $217,795 grant from the National Science Foundation.

Each institution has different expertise and laboratories. UW-Eau Claire has a Materials Science Center, CVTC has a high-end microscopy lab and Class 100 clean room and UW-Stout is focusing on nanobiotechnology. Students will travel among the three campuses.

In July, CVTC received approval from the governing board of the Wisconsin Technical College System to begin construction on a $5 million NanoRite Center to be located at its Gateway Campus in west Eau Claire. The center will house new and existing firms in need of technical facilities and in pursuit of nanotechnology and microfabrication applications.

The center will also attract firms interested in microfabrication: ultra-small machining used to create medical and other devices.
