CMP's research activities focus on the processing, structure, property and performance relationships for all classes of materials including metals, ceramics and polymers.

Due to its broad specturm of investigation, CMP's research activities require an interdisciplinary approach. Faculty and staff in the UT College of Engineering's Department of Materials Science and Engineering provide a great deal of support, however, participating researchers come from a variety of engineering disciplines including aerospace, biomedical, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, mechanical and nuclear engineering. Faculty from other UT colleges and schools are also involved in CMP research.

The major thrust areas of current research include:

* Nanoscience and technology
* Materials for advanced energy systems
* Materials for high performance applications
* Biomedical materials
* Polymer science and engineering
* Materials characterization
