Dendrimers [are one] class of important nanoparticles. Dendrimers are spherical nanoscale, polymeric, polyvalent molecules of well-defined chemical structure consisting of multiple shells (“generations”) synthesized around a small core molecule. Dendrimer nanotechnology is a rapidly expanding field with drug delivery only one of many potential applications.

The first dendrimer drugs with antiviral activity (HIV, herpes simplex) are under clinical investigation. In addition, a polyanionic dendrimer with potency as anti-HIV microbicide is undergoing regulatory approval processes in the United States.
