Dr. Kim's research interests lie in the area of molecular biophysics.

The chemical phenomena are fundamentally of quantum characteristics. To elucidate the origin of chemical and biochemical phonomena quantum chemical approach is indispensable. The research goal of our group is elucidating mechanisms of catalytic reactions of various enzymes and designing novel bio-active functional materials and molecular assemblies based on understanding of intra- and inter-molecular interaction forces using tools of quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics. Now our group is enthusiastically carrying out exploration of functional materials with the support of Creative Research Initiative, Ministry of Science and Technology of Korea.

The laboratory has three subdivisions: (1) quantum theoretical chemistry group, (2) theoretical condensed matter physics (many body, simulation, statistical mechanics, quantum field theory) group, and (3) synthesis and property measurement group. In (1), various quantum chemistry calculations including ab initio, density functional, and path integral calculations etc. among quantum theoretical calculations, are being done to design new functional molecules and materials. In (2), various quantum physics calculations including Car-Parinello MD simulations, quantum well study, molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations, integral equation methods, quantum field theory, etc are utilized to design new functional molecular and material systems. In (3), the theoretically designed molecular systems and materials are synthesized and assembled, and then their physical properties as well as their superfunctionality will be tested.
