Dr. Hornyak's experience in nanoscience and technology R&D spans 17 years. Diverse areas of expertise include carbon nanotube synthesis & thermodynamics, nanometal composite materials fabrication, characterization & optical properties, template synthesis and gold-55 quantum dot cluster synthesis & optical characterization. Dr. Hornyak has over 30 published papers/ patents in the field.

In April 2003, Dr. Hornyak founded the Colorado Nanotech Initiative (CNTI). CNTI is a non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to bring awareness about the promise of nanotechnology to the citizens, institutions and businesses of Colorado. CNTI became the state sanctioned organizing body for Colorado nanotechnology, and in May 2005 CNTI, was invited by the State of Colorado to join the Advance Colorado Center. Personal accomplishments of Dr. Hornyak with regard to the CNTI are listed below.

In February 2005, two business partners along with Dr. Hornyak formed NanoThread, Inc., a company with the mission of creating long strands of carbon nanotubes with equivalent length and high order. Partners include Dr. Mark Lusk (VP Atomistic Simulations), Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado; and Michael Burke (President / CEO). The NanoThread, Inc. model is an example of a facilitative partnership between and among government (National Renewable Energy Laboratory), academia (Colorado School of Mines) and business (NanoThread, Inc.) that is required to make nanotechology a viable enterprise.

Dr. Hornyak currently has developed a relationship with Taylor & Francis Books, Inc., CRC Press, and is coordinating and writing "Introduction to Nanoscience" and "Introduction to Nanotechnology", textbooks that target upper division and graduate students. Dr. Hornyak, along with Taylor & Francis, are in the process of producing a series of books dedicated to all that is outside the laboratory called "Perspectives in Nanotechnology", focusing on the societal implications of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
