An international team led by Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science has built optical nanostructures that can control light dispersion and engineer the index of refraction. This control of light propagation via photonic chips could prove a major breakthrough for telecommunications.

California researchers have developed computer simulations showing it may be possible to transform ‘optical space’ marrying transformation optics with a related field of electronics known as plasmonics.

Scientists at the University of California-Berkeley, are squeezing lightwaves tighter than ever, opening doors to new technologies for optical communications, miniature lasers and perhaps optical computers. The work unlocked ways to compress lightwaves to 10 nanometers – about five times the width of a DNA strand.
