Dr. Douglas’ research interests are in the general area of structure-property relationships in polymers.
In 1996 he joined the faculty of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Florida as Assistant Professor, and was named Associate Professor in 2002. Specific areas of current research are properties of epoxies for composite applications, structure-property relationships of liquid crystalline epoxies, and structure and processing of collagen for biomimetic applications. He is also interested in effective teaching techniques for engineering education. He has served as an instructor at the American Society of Civil Engineers ExCEEd Teaching Workshop and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Effective Teaching Seminar, and has presented papers on effective teaching at the American Society of Engineering Education Annual Conference. He has received several awards for his work, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 1997 and the Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers in 2001. He is currently Secretary for the Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering of the American Chemical Society and Managing Editor for the Journal of Macromolecular Science, Part C, Polymer Reviews.
Education
Dr. Douglas received two B.S. degrees from MIT in 1988, one in Materials Science and engineering and one in Humanities and Engineering. He received his Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst in 1992.
