Professor José Grácio received a PhD in Mechanics from the University of Coimbra, Portugal in 1992. The same year, he joined University of Aveiro has Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Prof. Gracio is currently the scientific coordinator of the Centre for Mechanical Technology and Automation, which obtained an EXCELLENT in the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and Director of the Centre for Nanotechnology of the Atlantic Park. He was Research Fellow at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and is Invited Professor at University Louis Pasteur in France. His main research interests are the implementation of physical models to predict the mechanical behaviour of materials for long-term applications in the areas of plasticity and nanotechnology. Prof. Grácio has great experience in Nanotechnology and his team has carried out in depth research on nanotechnology and achieved several worth mentioning significant results on hydroxyapatite/ CNT composite. He has actively participated in the scientific committees of various international conferences, has been regular reviewer in a number of scientific journals and serves as a member of the Adisory Board of the International Journal on micro and nanomanufacturing. Prof. Grácio is published as an author or co-author in approximately 150 papers of peer-reviewed scientific journals and has delivered more than 50 presentations at conferences worldwide. In 2000 he received from the Major of Abrantes the Honourable Award for Science and Technology; in 2002 he was the winner of the Bunshah Prize award for the best paper presented at the ICMCTF 2002, in 2004 he was the winner of APDF Prize award for the project Multiscale Approach of Materials for Automotive and Aircraft Industries, in 2005 he published the paper in IJP awarded with SigmaXI Prize. Prof. Grácio is inventor of 4 patents.

Career Highlights

During the year 1993, the University of Aveiro's, Department of Mechanical Engineering, was instrumental in opening the TEMA (http://www.mec.ua.pt/tema/index.html) as an independent unit. Since then, TEMA is growing by leaps and bounds and adding to its credit were researchers not only from the mechanical engineering, but also from materials science, chemistry, biochemistry, physics and other engineering disciplines.
In addition, researchers from other European and Non- European universities are working closely with this team. This has materialised in many projects of national and global level being carried out in TEMA.
During the year 2001, the Surface Engineering Laboratory was opened, as an integral part of TEMA. One of the worth mentioning achievement in this laboratory after its establishment is development of Time Modulated Chemical Vapour Deposition (TMCVD) process for the development of CVD diamond coating with ultra fine diamond grains [1-5]. In 2003, the surface engineering laboratory was renamed as Surface engineering and nanotechnology (SENT) laboratory (http://www.mec.ua.pt/cvd/). The TEMA and its subsidiaries are shown in the form of chart (Annexure 1).
During the period 2003-2006, the researchers in SENT have carried out indepth research on nanotechnology and achieved several worth mentioning significant results, which are of immense value to the present nanotechnology research community. The results are published and presented in top globally acclaimed international refereed journals and conferences [6-15]. One of the highly valued research achievements, “Attachment of ferromagnetic metal onto carbon nanotubes for spintronics application”, will soon be filed for a patent at both Portugal and North America.
During this period, researchers were also actively involved in pursuing promising nanotechnology research to develop equipment and procedures to manipulate materials with the aim of establishing a new world class of man-made nanostructures. They have supported the industrial and academic research efforts by supplying the modern, advanced materials required to perform nanotechnology research. They also have integrated both theoretical and experimental aspects of the material developed into their research. The researchers have also initiated collaborations in their respective field with laboratories across the world (Annexure 2). In collaborations with various research partners, research proposals (ESF & FCT) have been submitted to the national and international funding agencies. In addition to it, several research proposals have been proposed in collaboration with several European and Non-European universities and Industries, viz.,The Trinity College, Dublin; MDM, Italy; Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India, Inco Technical Services, Canada).
In view of the significance of nanotechnology in the new scientific world, and progress made by their researchers in the field of nanotechnology, TEMA has decided to set up a separate R & D (Research and Development) division, NRD, exclusively for nanotechnology research.
NRD will be a cross-disciplinary laboratory dedicated to research on nanoscience and nanotechnology. To best utilise the scientific/engineering opportunities in nanotechnology, the NRD will adapt an interdisciplinary approach encompassing multidisciplinary scientific projects. Partnership among industry-NRD (academic) with a view to upgrade the incorporation of new science and technology into fielded systems will be encouraged. Projects that utilize industry-NRD partnership which enhance the development of novel Science &Technology advances will be given favorable consideration. NRD’s mission is to create, support, and sustain an environment that facilitates advanced research on nano science and technology including bio-nanotechnology.
