Dr. Kono’s research interests lie in the areas of: Semiconductor Nanostructures and Devices; Ultrafast/Nonlinear Optics, and Electro-Optics and Magneto-Optics in Solids.

My research program explores the physics and applications of optical phenomena in semiconductor quantum structures. The objectives are to: 1) probe and understand the fundamental physics governing the quantum dynamics of interacting, confined, and driven electrons, 2) create and manipulate non-equilibrium charge and spin carriers using ultrashort laser pulses, and 3) develop and implement novel quantum device concepts. We are using cutting-edge optical spectroscopy techniques to investigate new physics in the highest-quality samples achievable in unexplored regimes of time, space, and field strength.

The impact of this research includes: increased understanding of the quantum states and dynamics of interacting, confined, and strongly driven electrons in nanostructures; new spectroscopy techniques; novel device concepts and implementations; establishment of the quantum nature of semiconductor-light interaction; progress towards the solid-state realization of quantum information processing, computation and communications; and provision of a controlled environment in which to address unanswered questions in many-body physics. Below I will outline individual on-going projects in this program.
