Mike Rowe holds a University of Wales Personal Chair. After graduating in mathematics at University College, Swansea in 1962 he obtained a Bachelor of Science (Physics) the following year. Postgraduate training was undertaken at the University of Bristol (MSc 1965) and Cardiff University (PhD 1967).

His first employment was as a United Kingdom Atomic Energy Research Fellow (Harwell UK) followed by successive appointments to Lecturer (1967) in what was the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology, Reader (1988) and Professor (1995) at the University of Wales Cardiff.

His research interest is in all aspects of thermoelectric energy conversion both refrigeration and generation. Over 30 years he has built up a research laboratory at Cardiff of international standing which, over this period, has attracted more than two dozen visiting academics/researchers, the majority of whom came from overseas and spent at least a year collaborating in externally funded research programmes. In the late 1970s and early 1980s his effort to increase the thermoelectric performance of semiconductors based on silicon-germanium alloys was successful and materials based on those developed at Cardiff were subsequently used in generating on-board electrical power for a number of US deep space missions such as Voyager, Galileo and Ulysses. It was for his contribution to thermoelectric material research that he received his higher Doctorate. In the 1990s the group’s research activities broadened to include device and applications, particularly the use of thermoelectric in the recovery of waste heat.

In 1994 he received a research contract of £1.8M from the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry to develop this technology and established the NEDO Centre for Thermoelectric Engineering. He has written more than 170 research/technical papers, co-authorised four books (one in Chinese) and edited three international conferences. The CRC handbook of Thermoelectrics, which he also edited, is the first definitive reference book on this subject and contains contributions from 58 internationally renowned researchers/
industrialists.

Mike Rowe has presented invited lectures at institutions in 19 different countries and undertaken extended research visits of two weeks or more to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory USA, Ioffe Technical Institute at St. Petersburg in Russia, Kunming Institute of Physics in China, Visiting Professor at MITI Laboratories at Tsukuba, Japan for a period of two months, Osaka University in Japan, Korean Institute of Science and Technology, INPE Laboratory in Brazil, University of Allahabad in India for three months and King Saud University in Saudi Arabia.

Consultancies have been undertaken for the Ministry of Defence, UK Atomic Energy Authority, Royal Naval College (Greenwich), Lucas Industries, General Electric (USA), United States Army (Fort Monmouth), Nippon Steel (Japan), SANCST (Saudi Arabia) and ESKOMF (South Africa).

In 1989 he received the Outstanding Technical Paper Award with Professor D.V. Morgan at the Eighth International Thermoelectric Conference, Nancy, France and was runner-up for the Research Achievement of the Year Award, British Electronics Week, 1990.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and of the Institute of Physics. In 1995 he was elected President of the Inter-national Thermoelectric Society, the first occasion that this position has been held by a non-American citizen.
