Dr. Andrei Shkel is on the faculty at the University of California – Irvine, where he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering.

He is also the Director of the UCI Micro-Systems Laboratory. After his Ph.D., Dr. Shkel joined Berkeley Sensor & Actuator Center (BSAC) as a postdoctoral researcher. He then held research and consulting positions in a dozen of Hi-Tech and Venture companies. Since 2000, Dr. Shkel has been on the faculty at the University of California –Irvine. His professional interests, reflected in over 90 publications, include solid-state sensors and actuators, MEMS-based neuroprosthetics, sensor-based intelligence, and control theory. Dr. Shkel is holding eight US and world-wide patents. He has served on a number of editorial boards and organizing committees, most recently Guest Editor for two (2004 and 2005) special issues of the IEEE Sensors Journal, General Chair of 2005 IEEE Sensors Conference, and Editorial Board Member for the International Journal on Smart Structures and Systems. Dr. Shkel was awarded the 2005 NSF CAREER award, 2002 George E. Brown, Jr. Award and was the recipient of 2001 Fellowship of the Japanese Advanced Science Institute.


Dr. Shkel received his Diploma (with excellence) in Mechanics and Mathematics from Lomonosov’s Moscow State University, Russia, in 1991. In 1997, he received Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Mechanical Engineering.
